Overnight Trekking in Bear Country

In search of bears in Sonfjället National Park – home of the brown bear

For the adventurous among us, we offer this thrilling experience in Sweden’s oldest national park, known for its high bear population! During this experience, you’ll hike deep into bear territory in search of tracks and, with a lot of luck, maybe even encounter a bear.

Spend the night in a cozy forest cabin after an intense trekking

This tour’s focus is to find animal tracks and hopefully even spot wildlife such as moose and bears. Your guide will share stories and facts about local wildlife and their habits during the trekking and can show you tracks and traces you would otherwise most likely miss! The guide knows the national park like his back pocket and can take you to places where the chances of actually seeing wildlife are the highest.

Itinerary

Day 1: Trekking into bear country

We meet at Dalsvallen, an old forest workers settlement at the South entrance of Sonfjället National Park. This is not only the oldest national park in Sweden, it is also believed to be the area that has the highest bear population in Sweden which makes it an excellent area for our wildlife tour.

We start our trekking on the official hiking trails in the national park. This way we can warm up our muscles and get used to the difficult terrain and our heavy packs in a more comfortable way. About half way we venture off the hiking trails and find our own way through areas where we have the highest chance of encountering wildlife such as moose, bears and variety of large birds of prey.

In the end of the afternoon we will descend down into the forest to reach the cabin where we will spend the night.

Day 2: A good breakfast and back to civilisation

After we have our breakfast at the cabin we pack up our gear and head back to civilisation. We will follow an unmarked trail through beautiful primeval forests, home to many bird species and other smaller wildlife, such as pine martens and a variety of rodents .

This part of the hike is approximately 6 km and mostly downhill.

TOUGH Longer tours where we often hike off trail in rough terrain with heavier backpacks. A good physical condition and hiking experience in the mountains are required.

We will walk in rough terrain off-trail where it may be rocky, mossy, wet and slippery, and possibly even in darkness with headlamps. These walks are slow with stops along the way and rarely last for more than an hour at a time. Please only sign up for this adventure if you think you will be fit enough for these walks.
